Product Description

A beautifully crafted Chinoiserie mantel clock by Smiths English Clocks Ltd., Cricklewood, London, dating from the 1930s. Featuring a striking black lacquered case adorned with gold Oriental-inspired motifs, this elegant timepiece is a perfect blend of British horology and decorative artistry.

The gilded Chinoiserie decoration, depicting delicate landscapes, pagodas, and figures, was likely created using a combination of transfer printing and hand-finishing, a technique common in the period. The scalloped gold trimalong the base was carefully applied by hand, adding to its refined charm.

At its heart is a rare early Smiths Type A hand-wound movement, one of the first hand-wound movements Smiths produced. The 1933 Smiths catalogue lists three movement types, and this is the Type A variant, making it a sought-after collector’s item. Unlike many later Smiths clocks, which only featured generic “8-day” or “30-hour” engravings, this piece retains its original “Smiths English Clocks Ltd., Cricklewood, London” stamp, confirming its early production. Professionally checked and in full working condition, it runs for approximately 5 days once wound.

This clock is not only a functional timepiece but also a statement piece for stylish interiors, complementing Art Deco, Chinoiserie, and vintage home decor styles. Its combination of rarity, craftsmanship, and decorative appeal makes it a truly special find.
