Product Description

A charming pair of antique Staffordshire dogs, known as glass-eyed spaniels, dating to around c.1890. This type is documented in The A–Z of Staffordshire Dogs by Clive Mason Pope and represents a later and distinctive development in Staffordshire figure production.

These spaniels feature inserted glass eyes, a technique that began appearing in the latter half of the 19th century. Glass eyes were first used in dolls and decorative needlework, and were later adopted by Staffordshire potters to add a heightened sense of realism and expression. Their introduction helped revive interest in Staffordshire figures at a time when the market was beginning to change.

The softly modelled bodies, alert expressions and subtle hand-painted details give this pair a gentle presence. When displayed together, they have a quiet charm that sits beautifully within both classic and more eclectic interiors.
