Product Description:
This charming pair of square serving bowls features soft ivory-toned earthenware with a colourful fruit motif and delicate gilt edging. Made over a century ago by F. Winkle & Co Ltd at their Colonial Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, these pieces reflect the warm, decorative style of early 20th-century English tableware.
Founded in 1890, F. Winkle & Co became known for producing quality earthenware under the Wheldon Ware name. The backstamp on these bowls, which reads simply “England,” was in use between 1911 and the mid-1920s. Today, this mark not only helps us date the pieces but also connects them to a distinctive period in British ceramics history. The company was later absorbed into Ridgways, then Doulton & Co, placing these pieces within a distinguished lineage of British ceramic production.
Despite their age, both bowls remain in remarkably good condition. The surface shows a fine, even crazing that enhances their antique character, with no chips or cracks. It is rare to find a matching pair from this era so well preserved.
The fruit motif, once a classic of Edwardian tableware, has seen a resurgence in modern interiors. Whether styled on open kitchen shelves, used for fruit or side dishes, or displayed as part of a vintage collection, these pieces blend timeless English charm with current design sensibilities.
