Product Description

This charming Copeland Spode sandwich plate comes from the Byron Series No.2, produced in 1937, part of a special promotion with Angus Watson’s Skippers sardines. Customers could exchange sardine tin labels for this “sandwich dish,” which was originally offered with a silver-plated handle and fork. The plate is divided into four sections by a raised cross, a feature specially designed for this promotion. The centre design, showing a girl giving a drink to a boy within a trellis vine border, was first registered in 1851. This makes the plate a fascinating blend of Victorian artistry and early 20th-century marketing history.

Spode was founded in Stoke-on-Trent in the 18th century by Josiah Spode, renowned for pioneering transfer printing and perfecting fine bone china. By the early 20th century the company was trading as W. T. Copeland & Sons Ltd, while continuing to use the Spode name. This plate reflects that heritage, combining tradition with everyday life in a uniquely memorable way.
