Product Description:
Bring home a piece of storytelling magic with this framed illustration of The Matsuyama Mirror, a captivating Japanese fairy tale. Illustrated by British artist Warwick Goble (1862–1943), this print reflects Goble’s fascination with oriental themes, using his distinctive watercolour technique to capture the story’s delicate beauty. Goble’s work became widely celebrated during the early 20th century, and his artistry played a key role in the “golden era” of illustrated books. Originally published around 1910, this limited edition (produced in 1995) is one of only 1,500 copies created for the UK market, faithfully capturing the essence of the original.
The Matsuyama Mirror tells the story of a mother who, knowing her time is short, gives her daughter a mirror, saying, "Look into this mirror whenever you miss me." At a time when mirrors were rare, the daughter faithfully gazed into it, believing she saw her mother. Little did she know, the reflection was her own, thinking it to be her mother’s youthful face. Warwick Goble’s soft colour palette and intricate details bring this heartwarming and timeless story to life.
While this illustration has Japanese roots, Goble’s artistry lends it a versatile appeal suited to both oriental and modern vintage interiors. It will add a unique touch of history and charm to any space.
