Description

A charming nursery rhyme cup and saucer by Tuscan China, dating to the early 20th century, likely c.1910s. Decorated with the beloved Hey Diddle Diddle characters, the cat playing the fiddle, the cow jumping over the moon and the dish and spoon, it captures the whimsical charm of English children’s illustration from the Edwardian era. The saucer features Little Jack Horner, making this a delightful double-rhyme example.

Produced by R H & S L Plant Ltd at the Tuscan Works in Longton, Staffordshire, a pottery respected for its fine porcelain wares before later joining the Wedgwood Group. The backstamp with ENGLAND (rather than Made in England) confirms production prior to 1920, placing this piece firmly in the early decades of the 20th century. Early Tuscan nursery pieces are not often seen today and are admired for their delicate bodies and gentle storybook charm.

With its soft, picture-book illustrations and refined proportions, this cup and saucer sits beautifully on a shelf or dresser, especially when styled with vintage children’s books or small nursery decorative pieces. A lovely choice for those who appreciate English nursery rhymes, early porcelain and interiors with a nostalgic, bookish feel.
