Vintage JASBA West German Pottery Vase with Cats, 1950s

This charming vintage vase by JASBA features a wonderfully playful mid-century scene of three cats sitting side by side and gazing intently at two birds in a hanging cage.

Beside them stands an elegantly dressed woman in a full blue skirt, accompanied by a small child playing at her feet. The fine black outlines and touches of blue, green, orange and brown stand out beautifully against the soft cream glaze, while the cats’ fixed attention on the birdcage gives the illustration its irresistible sense of humour.

Founded in 1926 by Jakob Schwaderlapp in Baumbach, JASBA became one of the best-known names in West German pottery. The name JASBA was formed from JAkob Schwaderlapp and BAumbach. While the company is often associated with the bold colours and heavily textured glazes of later West German ceramics, this vase shows the more delicate, illustrative style of its 1950s production.

The base is impressed “Germany 562/26”, identifying it as JASBA form number 562. It also retains its original JASBA label, which is a lovely feature for collectors.

With its elegant flared silhouette and beautifully preserved cat illustration, this unusual vase would bring plenty of character to a vintage interior.

Condition

In good vintage condition with a very fine hairline extending from the rim on the left side. It is discreetly positioned and does not detract when displayed from the front.

There is a small unglazed area on the edge of the foot from manufacture. The illustration remains beautifully clear, and the original JASBA label is intact.
