Product Description

This striking pair of Staffordshire cats by William Kent brings a playful, painterly charm to classic English pottery. Produced in the 1940s or early 1950s, these mid-century figures are seated proudly on green cushions with metallic gold edging, their bodies decorated with bold, hand-painted reddish-brown markings that stand out beautifully against the bright ivory glaze.

Each piece is finished with a hand-painted bow collar and expressive facial detailing, characteristic of Kent’s work. The surface is adorned with fine white crazing — a feature often embraced by collectors, as it enhances the vintage texture and depth of the glaze. Interestingly, such crazing was sometimes deliberately created by potters to evoke the patina of age, lending their work an antique aesthetic.

William Kent, a prominent name in mid-20th-century English ceramics, began producing Staffordshire Ware in 1894. Known for his whimsical animals, flat-back figures, and decorative cats and dogs, Kent’s pieces are beloved by collectors and vintage interior enthusiasts alike. These cats carry the official William Kent backstamp — “Staffordshire Ware Kent Made in England” — with the iconic Staffordshire Knot, confirming their authenticity and heritage.

Highly sought after, especially in matched pairs, these cats bring a charming vintage presence to any space, whether styled in an eclectic interior or cherished in a growing collection.
