Product Description

A striking pair of mid-century Staffordshire-style cats by Arthur Wood, a respected English pottery house established in 1884 and known for finely modelled decorative ceramics. Produced during the mid-20th-century revival of Victorian designs, this pair offers a fresh interpretation of traditional Staffordshire figures.

Unlike the more familiar cushion-based Staffordshire cats, these examples feature an elegant upright seated posture with long, graceful lines and a poised, regal expression. Their crisp white glaze provides a clean, timeless backdrop for the charming scattered rose motif, while gilt collars and hand-painted features add refined character. At approximately 29cm in height, they make a confident and elegant statement.

Staffordshire cats are significantly rarer than dogs, and Arthur Wood’s cat figures are produced in much smaller numbers. The floral rose pattern is particularly uncommon, making this a wonderful opportunity for collectors and interior enthusiasts alike. Ideal for English cottage and country-house interiors, romantic vintage styling, mid-century accents, and grandmacore-inspired spaces.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. Both pieces display the natural glaze crazing associated with age, with the rose decoration and gilding remaining clear and bright. One cat has a tiny kiln speck on the body, a characteristic from production rather than later wear (Please see the last photo).
