Description

This charming original vintage watercolour depicts a sleepy kitten peacefully curled up inside a well-worn leather boot.

Beautifully painted with soft, delicate brushwork, the artist has captured the kitten's peaceful expression and fluffy coat with wonderful warmth and character. Equally captivating is the stunning original frame. Its beautifully detailed decorative moulding complements the rich brown tones of the leather boot perfectly, creating a piece that feels complete as both artwork and decorative object.

Signed McGowan, the reverse retains the original studio label reading:

W. McGowan
9 Edith Terrace
Chelsea, S.W.10

Another detail that makes this piece so special is the original studio label on the reverse. The old-style London postal district, written as "S.W.10" with full stops, offers a fascinating clue to its age. Together with the original frame and backing, it suggests the painting was created sometime between the 1920s and 1950s.

During this period, Chelsea was one of London's best-known artistic communities, home to many painters, illustrators and designers. The surviving studio label provides a wonderful connection to this rich artistic heritage and adds to the painting's provenance.

A delightful original artwork for cat lovers, collectors of vintage British art, or anyone looking for a unique piece with charm, history and character.

Condition

The watercolour is in lovely vintage condition.

The original frame shows age-related wear consistent with its age, including an old repair to one section of the decorative moulding and a small loss to another section of the decoration, as shown in the photographs. These imperfections do not detract from the overall appearance or display of the piece.

The reverse has been fitted with a later protective backing board, with a carefully cut viewing window allowing the original studio label to remain visible.
